Is Fall a Good Time to Clear Land in Wisconsin?

Fall can be a good time for land clearing in Wisconsin, but the time of year is only one part of deciding when to start a project.
Ground conditions, access, the type of vegetation being removed and what you want to accomplish with the property all matter. Some projects are a good fit for fall, while others are better done once the ground freezes.
At Midwest Land Solutions, we look at the property first. If conditions are good for land clearing, forestry mulching or invasive species removal in the fall, we can get to work. If waiting for winter will give us better access or cause less disturbance to the property, we'll recommend waiting.
What Makes Fall a Good Time for Land Clearing?
Cooler temperatures and less vegetation can make fall a good time to work on overgrown properties, trails and wooded areas.
It's also a good time to address brush and invasive species that have become established during the growing season.
Depending on the property, fall projects may include:
Invasive species removal
Trail and access clearing
Selective clearing
Woodland and habitat work
Site preparation
Not every property needs the same approach. We may be clearing an area for better access on one property and selectively removing invasive growth to improve a woodland on another.
What About Buckthorn and Other Invasive Species?
Fall can also be a good time to identify areas where buckthorn and other invasive species have taken over.
Once invasive growth becomes established, it can crowd out native vegetation, limit access and change the health of a woodland.
Removing the unwanted growth may be part of the solution, but invasive species management isn't always a one-time project. Depending on the property, follow-up treatment or continued management may be needed.
That's why we look at invasive species removal as part of managing the property, not simply clearing brush.
Sometimes Winter Is the Better Time
Fall isn't automatically the best time to clear every property.
If the ground is wet or soft, waiting until winter may make more sense. Frozen ground can improve equipment access in certain areas and help reduce soil disturbance.
We work throughout the winter for exactly that reason.
If we look at a property in the fall and believe waiting for frozen conditions is the better option, we'll recommend waiting rather than forcing the project into poor conditions.
Start With a Plan for the Property
Before deciding how or when to clear a property, we want to know what the landowner is trying to accomplish.
It might be better access, healthier woods, invasive species control, improved wildlife habitat, a new trail or preparing an area for future development.
That helps determine what should be removed, what should stay and the best time to do the work.
Forestry mulching and land clearing are tools we use to get there. The end goal is a property that works better for the landowner and is easier to manage going forward.
