Beyond the Burn: How Long-Term Management Restored a Wisconsin Prairie and Wetland
A prescribed burn can be one of the most visible moments in prairie restoration. Flames move across the landscape. Smoke rises above the horizon. A field that appeared dormant or overgrown is transformed within hours.
To someone unfamiliar with restoration ecology, fire may appear to be the end of a process. In reality, it is often the beginning.
Successful prairie restoration is not measured by the day a seed mix is planted or the day a burn is completed. It is measured years later by the diversity of native plants returning, the wildlife that depends on them, the health of the soil, the function of wetlands, and the ability of the ecosystem to withstand future challenges.
The story of a 60-acre restoration project in Jefferson County, Wisconsin, demonstrates an important lesson: Restoration does not end when the work is completed. Restoration succeeds when the land continues to be managed.
Restoring Prairie and Wetland Habitat
In 2013, approximately 60 acres in Jefferson County, Wisconsin, underwent a significant habitat restoration effort designed to convert former agricultural land into a functioning prairie and wetland ecosystem. The project included several important conservation improvements:

Agricultural drainage tiles were removed to restore natural hydrology.

Duck scrapes were created to provide seasonal wetland habitat.

The remaining agricultural field was converted into native prairie.

A conservation seed mix developed through NRCS guidance was planted.
The original seed mix included species selected for establishment and site adaptation, including redtop, red clover, Virginia wildrye, and swamp bluegrass. However, prairie restoration is not simply about what is planted. A successful restoration also relies on the existing seedbank, the collection of native seeds naturally stored within the soil that can remain dormant until proper conditions allow them to germinate.
Beneath the surface of this property was the potential for a diverse native plant community. The challenge was maintaining the conditions necessary for that community to thrive.
Restoration Requires Stewardship
One of the most misunderstood aspects of habitat restoration is the belief that once a property has been restored, it will maintain itself indefinitely. Prairies are not static landscapes. They evolved with disturbance. Fire, grazing, flooding, and seasonal changes historically shaped these ecosystems and prevented aggressive plants from dominating. Without continued management, the balance shifts.
Over approximately twelve years, this 60-acre property gradually lost the ecological conditions that supported a diverse prairie and wetland community. Invasive species began gaining a competitive advantage. Reed canary grass expanded throughout wetter areas.
Canada thistle established in portions of the prairie. Cattails filled the duck scrapes. Phragmites created dense stands that reduced wetland diversity. The landscape was still green. But green does not always mean healthy. A functioning prairie is measured by diversity, not simply vegetation coverage.
Understanding the Impact of Invasive Species
Invasive plants succeed because they are highly adapted to disturbed environments. They often grow aggressively, spread quickly, and outcompete native species for sunlight, nutrients, and space.

Reed Canary Grass: Reed canary grass is one of Wisconsin's most challenging wetland invasive species. It spreads through aggressive rhizomes and can form dense stands that prevent native wetland plants from establishing.

Canada Thistle: Canada thistle spreads through extensive root systems and can persist despite repeated disturbance. Effective control requires understanding its growth cycle and using appropriate management timing.

Cattails: Cattails are an important native wetland component, but when conditions favor expansion, they can rapidly dominate shallow wetlands. Dense cattail growth reduces open water habitat and limits opportunities for waterfowl and other wetland-dependent wildlife.

Phragmites: Phragmites forms tall, dense monocultures that alter wetland structure, reduce plant diversity, and diminish habitat value.
The goal of restoration is not to eliminate every plant that grows on a property. The goal is to restore ecological balance.
Why Prescribed Fire Was Necessary
After evaluating the condition of the property, Midwest Land Solutions developed a management approach focused on restoring the original ecological intent of the site. The first step included targeted herbicide applications in appropriate areas to reduce invasive vegetation while protecting desirable native plants. Following that treatment, a prescribed fire was conducted in the spring of 2025.
Fire is one of the most important tools available in prairie management. Native prairie plants evolved with fire as a natural ecological process. Many native grasses and wildflowers possess extensive root systems that remain protected underground during a burn.
A properly conducted prescribed fire can:

Recycle nutrients back into the soil.

Suppress woody encroachment.

However, fire alone is not a solution. Fire is a tool. Successful restoration requires understanding when, where, and how to use that tool.
What Happened After the Burn?
The response from the property was dramatic. Native vegetation that had been suppressed beneath invasive growth began returning across the site. The prairie responded with renewed vigor as grasses and wildflowers regained access to sunlight and growing space.
Native grasses began emerging, including:

Canada wildrye
These grasses provide structure, erosion protection, nesting habitat, and critical cover for wildlife.
Native Wildflowers
The site began showing increased diversity of flowering plants that support native pollinators as well, including:

Butterfly milkweed

These plants provide nectar, pollen, seeds, and habitat throughout the growing season.
A Landscape Supporting Wildlife Again
The ecological response was not limited to vegetation. Healthy habitat supports wildlife. Before invasive vegetation overtook the wetland areas, the property supported abundant waterfowl utilizing the duck scrapes.
The prairie also provided habitat for significant butterfly and pollinator activity, along with regular deer use throughout the property. As invasive vegetation changed the wetland structure, available open water declined and waterfowl use decreased.
This illustrates an important principle: Habitat quality is directly connected to habitat management. When vegetation communities change, wildlife communities change with them.
Restoring the Duck Scrapes: Learning From the Landscape
The original duck scrapes were designed to provide wetland habitat. However, after twelve years, the shallow 18-inch depth allowed invasive vegetation to establish quickly. Cattails and phragmites eventually filled the scrapes, eliminating much of the open water habitat they were intended to provide. Rather than simply recreating the original design, Midwest Land Solutions evaluated how the site performed over time and developed an improved approach.
The next phase will include:

Re-excavating all three duck scrapes.

Increasing maximum depth to four feet.

Creating gradual 8:1 side slopes.

Restoring open water habitat.
-
Re-establishing native wetland vegetation following disturbance.
The increased depth will provide greater water persistence, improved habitat diversity, and additional resistance to rapid invasive vegetation establishment. This is adaptive management in practice. Restoration is not about following a plan forever.
It is about learning from the landscape and improving future outcomes.

The Jefferson County project represents something important about restoration. The burn was not the finish line. It was a turning point. The real success came from understanding what the land needed, identifying what was limiting ecological recovery, and applying the right management tools at the right time.
A prairie is more than grasses and flowers. A wetland is more than standing water. They are living systems shaped by time, disturbance, and careful stewardship.
